Why a ‘Mom-and-Pop’ Shop in Irving Has Been Slinging Even More Empanadas Than Usual

Empa Mundo, a small Argentinean restaurant in Irving, has been slinging even more empanadas than usual.

Owner Raul Gordon said the restaurant has been overwhelmed by the response after it landed on Yelp’s list of top 100 restaurants in Texas.

The list, which came out May 12, named Empa Mundo No. 31.

“We are just a small mom-and-pop shop,” Gordon said. “We tend to keep a low profile.”

Yelp does not give many details about its methodology for compiling the list, which often includes under-the-radar restaurants. It states that the rankings are based on “a number of factors,” including the total volume and ratings of reviews between January 1, 2016 and April 16, 2021.

Empa Mundo has more than 1,100 rave reviews on Yelp.

“This is the definition of a hole-in-the-wall gold mine,” one reviewer wrote in 2020.

Another wrote, “This place is absolute heaven and one of my new favorites.”
