‘Moving in the Correct Direction’: North Texas COVID-19 Hospitalizations Declining, Officials Say

Hospitalizations for COVID-19 are trending down across North Texas, health officials say.

New admissions for coronavirus are declining in the four most populous North Texas counties, according to the latest forecast from UT Southwestern Medical Center. The number of hospitalizations in Dallas County is expected to fall steeply, to about 600 by mid-October. Currently, 765 people are hospitalized for COVID-19 in the county.

Tarrant County hospitalizations, which have been higher than Dallas County’s recently, are predicted to drop to 800 by mid-October. Currently, 928 people are hospitalized for the disease in Tarrant County.

Overall, North Texas counties “tend to be moving in the correct direction,” said Steve Love, president and CEO of the DFW Hospital Council.

In an update Tuesday with the Irving-Las Colinas Chamber of Commerce, Love said that about 44% of intensive care patients in the 19-county area that includes Dallas-Fort Worth were COVID-19 patients. Just a few weeks ago, that number was more than 50%, he said.

However, hospital admissions for those under 50 remain higher than previous surges, and pediatric hospitalizations are still nearly double the numbers from January, the UT Southwestern forecast says.
