Irving’s Robert Scott Pohl Planetarium was built in 1968, a year before man walked on the moon.
More than 50 years later, the planetarium has received a $250,000 facelift, with a new computer system, surround sound system, and new seats and carpeting.
The planetarium — which is inside Nimitz High School — was one of the first built inside a Texas public school. It is one of only 14 such planetariums today, according to the district.
Additional upgrades include new paint, a new control console and a laser-illuminated projector, the district said on its website. Nimitz High School Career and Technical Education students designed and installed custom-controlled LED lights.
