Irving Public Libraries has announced plans to transform two digital media labs into hands-on makerspaces, complete with 3d printers, laser etchers and sewing machines.
Called MiY (Make It Yourself) Zones, the makerspaces are planned to debut this spring at Valley Ranch and South Irving libraries.
The spaces will allow patrons to learn new job skills, explore their creativity and promote community building and collaboration, according to the city.
Irving also plans to purchase a Cricut smart cutting machine, which can cut materials from delicate fabrics to leather, and computers with graphics software.
Library staff will be trained to use the technology, and the city will offer beginning programs and classes, including the basics of coding and an introduction to podcasting.
The spaces are being funded by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services to the Texas State Library and Archives Commission.
“Communities in every corner of Texas will benefit from the resources that have been made available through this list of forward thinking grant proposals,” librarian and commission director Mark Smith said in a statement.
